Washington Capitals: Team Meeting Sunday
The Washington Capitals held a team meeting on Sunday to hash out the issues facing the team. Throughout the years, whenever this team does poorly, immediately the fans and pundits point to a lack of work ethic.
Now there is no doubt that the Capitals have been extremely sloppy over the last few games. However, what can the Caps do to improve their situation?
The first thing is to get back on defense and stay in their shape. Too often, Caps are out of position to deal with the rush or pick up the wrong man. Perhaps this is due to their even strength struggles and they are pressing in order to try and generate offense.
Regardless, it would be greatly beneficial for this team to re-focus on defense. After all, you can’t win when you are giving up four goals per game.
The other area that they should focus on is winning the battles along the boards. Let me clarify: the Caps have been excellent at getting one man to the battle on the dump. However, there have been many occasions when one forward crashes down, wins the battle (or at least holds it to a draw), but then the defense easily clears due to lack of support.
The Caps have to work together better as a unit both on defensive and offense. This requires hard work, sacrifice, and (most importantly) mental acumen. This is where Adam Oates comes into play; as the coach, he must instill his system and have the players stick to it.
The Caps have a great chance to meet their money where their mouth is on Monday against the Edmonton Oilers. Let’s see what the results of their team meeting are tomorrow night.
