Tom Wilson is Staying with the Washington Capitals
Per nhl.com Tom Wilson is staying with the Washington Capitals for the entire season. While this is not a surprise given the trade of Mathieu Perrault, it was still up in the air.
The organization seems to believe that going back to Plymouth would do more harm than good for young Tom Wilson and have resolved to keep him with the club. Wilson has shown flashes of offensive talent, getting stoned twice on point-blank chances so far. He has also provided toughness and feistiness around the boards.
Hopefully, Wilson will move up the lines and assume his position as Lucic-lite sooner rather than later. Some have speculated that the pairing of Erat and Wilson is so that they can progress up the depth chart together.
Wilson tweeted: “extremely excited to have this opportunity. Thanks to all for the constant support!”
Wilson has only been averaging shy of seven minutes a game. Since it’s been confirmed that he will be staying, expect Wilson to take on an extended role, gradually increasing minutes.
I also am interested to see if he begins to take on more responsibility on special teams as a front of the net presence on the power play and as a point man on the penalty kill. It will be interesting to track Adam Oates’ trust in our young power forward.
Best of luck to Tom Wilson and congratulations on making the 2013-2014 team.
