Washington Capitals: Previewing the Week Ahead
The Washington Capitals get to enjoy the hospitality of our Canadian neighbors this week. They have games against the Winnipeg Jets, the Edmonton Oilers, and the Calgary Flames as they tour the Great White North.
They start the road trip off with a game against the team formally known as the Atlanta Thrashers. The Caps former division opponent is off to a slow start but has still managed to have a better record than the Capitals. The Jets have two more points than the Caps though our boys still have a game in hand.
After the Jets, the Capitals turn to the younger guns of Edmonton. Edmonton has allowed the most goals in the league which has lead to some speculation as to who they could try to bring in to solidify their goalie situation.
Initial speculation was around a blockbuster deal for Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek per Oilonwhyte and rumor is that Nail Yakupov could be on the block. Would you trade Neuvirth for Yakupov? It would be something to have him and Evgeny Kuznetsov together…
While Yakupov is extremely tempting, I think that Ladislav Smid would be the more tempting piece. Smid would be an excellent pairing with Mike Green and is a physical shutdown defenseman. Last season, Smid had eighty hits and seventy blocked shots, leading the Oilers defensive corps.
Finally, the Capitals get a rematch with the Calgary Flames after their comeback shootout win. The Flames will likely want revenge for that tough loss after they blew two different three goal leads.
The Caps have an excellent shot at picking up some points this week and they can’t afford to drop many. I predict the Capitals take four out of six points from this week but would love to see five or six!
