With the first overall pick in the 2004 draft, the Washington Capitals selected Alex Ovechkin. It was the Capitals 3rd opportunity to select 1st overall in their history – once in their inaugural year, 1974, and then again 2 years later in 1976. As everyone knows, the Pittsburgh Penguins selected 2nd, and they too drafted a sensational Russian – Evgeni Malkin.

The 2004 draft may not have been as deep as the infamous 2003 draft class, but that isn’t to say there wasn’t plenty of talent to select from. Players such as Mike GreenAlex Goligoski, Mikhail GrabovskiDrew Stafford, and two recent Stanley Cup champions Dave Bolland, and Bryan Bickell top the list of quality draft picks in 2004.
