December was a rough month for the Washington Capitals, who hoped to hit the ground running in 2014. Sadly, that hasn’t been the case. We’ve seen the Caps drop to third in the Metropolitan Division with the knowledge that they could continue to sink in the standings. Their weaknesses have finally caught up, and the team’s deficiencies can no longer be masked by the success of their lethal power play–and even Alex Ovechkin’s goal scoring.
Where did it all go wrong? Don’t deny that the Capitals are struggling. If nothing else, numbers don’t lie. Are lousy puck possession numbers to blame? What about the shoddy penalty kill? Or are mental errors responsible for the team’s poor play as a whole?
