The Washington Capitals needed change. In hiring Barry Trotz, they will definitely be getting change. Trotz is an extremely experienced coach and is well-respected around the NHL. Here are just a few reasons for Washington Capitals fans to believe that Trotz will take the Capitals back to the playoffs, and potentially to a Stanley Cup!
Barry Trotz Has A Talented Team
Barry Trotz is known as a defensive-minded coach. While that is true, it is important to remember why he is one: he had to be one. With the Nashville Predators, Trotz never had players like Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, or Evgeny Kuznetsov. Here are Nashville’s single season leaders.
Former Capitals forward Jason Arnott holds the goal record with 33. Alex Ovechkin’s lowest single season goal total is 32 (done twice, once in 2010-2011 and once in a shortened season). Paul Kariya holds the assist record with 54. Nicklas Backstrom has topped that total in all but one of the full seasons that he has played.
Barry Trotz will be coaching talent that he has never had. Trotz is a very smart coach and I think he will utilize that talent.
Barry Trotz Knows Defense
The players most impacted by the hiring of Barry Trotz will be the defensemen. The Washington Capitals have a relatively inexperienced group of defensemen. John Erskine is the only one who’s over the age of 30. Everyone looked completely lost last season and seemed to lack a sense of direction. Trotz will quickly change that.
Barry Trotz was vital in the development of Shea Weber and Ryan Suter. Trotz will now be responsible for Karl Alzner, John Carlson, Mike Green, and Dmitry Orlov. I’m especially excited to see what Trotz will do for Carlson and Orlov. Both thrived under Dale Hunter.
Barry Trotz Gets The Most Out Of His Players
In Nashville, Barry Trotz had to get the absolute most out of his players in order to have success. He consistently got more out of less and under Trotz, the Predators consistently overachieved. It’s easy to see why Trotz is a terrific fit with the Washington Capitals, who have been underachievers. If Trotz can get the most out of the Capitals players, the entire Eastern Conference should be scared of the Capitals. When they play at their best, they can beat anyone. Trotz should help the Capitals play at their best more consistently.
