New Coach Barry Trotz came out and stated exactly what he is looking for when it comes to good defense for his Washington Capitals.
“I’m going to tell the players, when you have the puck, I want you to make good decisions and I want you to score some goals and I want you to be hard on people and the puck,” Trotz said. “And if you don’t have it, I want to get it back again so we can re-attack.
“That’s good defense. Defense is about getting the puck quickly so you can do something offensively.”
It is more than just keeping the puck out of the net and getting in the way to block shots. Trotz is looking for his team to get the puck back as qucikly as they can. These looks to be an offense driven defensive stance. This could work. I recall when Sidney Crosby came out and stated that if we have the puck more than the other team then they have a less chance to score. It really comes down to puck control and maintaining that control for the majority of the game.
New GM Brian MacLellan joined into the conversation as well stating this…
“It’s not going to be one individual working hard and the others watching. It’s going to be five guys working in sync together hard.”
Everybody needs to be defensively motivated for the team to be successful.
Will everyone be on board? This also leads to the discussion on a previous article that Alex Ovechkin will need to play defense and not just cherry pick. He not only needs to be on board as the captain of this Capitals team, but he needs to go out and play defense as any other player would be expected to.
