Yesterday, we took a look at the centerpiece of the trade that brought Adam Oates to the Washington Capitals: Jason Allison. Today, we look at the #1 active Capitals player alphabetically and also the #1 mustache grower on the team, Karl Alzner!
Karl Alzner’s Career
Karl Alzner was drafted 5th overall in the 2007 NHL draft. He made his NHL debut on November 26th, 2008. He got his first NHL point on December 4th, 2008 and scored his first NHL goal on December 6th, 2008. He was up and down between the Capitals and the Hershey Bears before coming up for good to start the 2010-2011 NHL season.
Alzner has never been a big point scorer. He did, however, set a career high in points during the 2013-2014 season with 18 (two goals, 16 assists). Why isn’t Alzner a big point scorer? Well, two reasons for that. First of all, Alzner rarely, if ever, sees any power play time. Secondly, his career shooting percentage is comically bad: 2.3%. Just over one out of every 50 shots on goal that Alzner has had in his career have gone in. Scoring isn’t Alzner’s thing though- he earns his paycheck through his defense.
From a defensive standpoint, Alzner had his worst year last season. His Fenwick and Corsi have never stood out, but last year, they were bad, even for him. He also had his worst ever season as far as plus/minus (-7). He was great until Adam Oates began coaching him, so I’m willing to give him a pass. Hopefully Trotz can help revive Alzner’s career.
Karl Alzner’s Future
I think Karl Alzner has a bright future. I think Barry Trotz is going to be great for Alzner. I don’t care how few points Alzner scores as long as he’s a stalwart on defense. Pair him with Mike Green or John Carlson and some of his lack of offense can be off set.
Karl Alzner, you are quite the gif-able player. Example 1. Example 2. Example 3. Example 4. I rest my case. Here’s to many more gifs being made of you, more epic handlebar mustaches, and more awesomeness because we just love you!
