Nikita Scherbak may be in a Washington Capitals uniform come June 27th, Day 1 of the NHL Draft. With the likelihood that Jake Virtanen, Ehlers, and Haydn Fleury all gone before the 13th pick, the Capitals may have to look elsewhere for their first round draft pick.
Scherbak is a 6’2 174# Left Winger that can play Center as well. Scherbak was an unknown until he came to the Saskatoon Blades. With the Blades he played in 54 games and finished with 69 total points; 26 goals and 43 assists. This performance catapulted him into the 1st round after being virtually non-existent.
He brings size and ability to the forward line for the Caps not to mention he is intelligent.
An intelligent player who’s shown to be very coachable, Scherbak’s game is featured around strong skating, creative vision and a willingness to engage physically in puck battles at both ends of the rink. He’s learning quickly and his big steps in development are exactly what teams covet.
– Brendon Ross, Dobber Prospects
Scherbak should be a consideration for the Caps come June 28. I think that once Virtanen is gone, there is not a viable defensemen available until the 2nd round. They need to go big on the offensive side and find a player that can fight for the puck and back check. This guy looks to be a good fit for what they need.
