Washington D.C. and the 2024 Olympics

In an effort to bring more to the city of Washington D.C., a project dubbed “DC2024″ is in the works and is being pursued by your Washington Capitals and Wizards Owner Ted Leonsis, Russ Ramsey a Virginia based financier and a former AOL executive to bring the 2024 summer Olympics to the nations capital.

Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins in a comment stated…

“We look forward to assisting the Washington Olympic Committee in presenting the nation’s capital and fabulous surrounding region to the Olympic sporting world. We are fortunate to have most of the venues needed in an internationally recognized city that is accustomed to staging high-profile events.”

Snyder is right.  D.C. has the facilities to handle the Olympics and they have done high profile, big events before.  There would not need to be a lot done to get the city ready for the Olympics.

The 2024 Olympics would be the first Olympics on American Soil since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.  Other Cities in the bid for the stage are Boston, San Fransisco, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Diego.  New York City and Philadelphia were in the running but both withdrew their bids back in May.

I think that it would be a great to see the Olympics in our Nation’s Capital.  We have seen it before in other countries, why has it taken so long for it to get to D.C.?
