The Washington Capitals have continued the rebuilding of their front office, promoting director of amateur scouting Ross Mahoney to Assistant General Manager. Mahoney had served as the director of amateur scouting for the Capitals for the past 16 seasons. Prior to joining the Washington Capitals, Mahoney was a scout with the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks.
According to the Washington Capitals press release, Mahoney will assist and advise MacLellan in all player-related matters. Mahoney will also oversee the club’s developmental programs and the organization’s amateur scouting staff.
Personally, I love the hiring and I think it’s well-deserved. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Mahoney on multiple occasions. I would say that I had the opportunity to talk to him, but honestly, it felt more like I was talking TO him because Mahoney doesn’t do much talking. He likes to listen.
Mahoney is a guy who obsesses over what he does. He watches countless games to prepare for the NHL draft. I can always have a good conversation with him about the OHL or WHL. Funny thing is, he always cared about what I thought about guys, even though Mahoney has forgotten more about hockey this second than I could ever dream of knowing.
Mahoney has done great things with the Washington Capitals, and he will continue to do so. He’s a huge reason that the Washington Capitals have had a ton of success in the draft as of late.
This couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person. Congratulations Ross Mahoney, and I look forward to hopefully talking to you at Capitals development camp!
