Washington Capitals Will Host Chicago in Winter Classic

The Washington Capitals will definitely be hosting an outdoor hockey game next season. The question is, who are they going to face? Rumors had the Washington Capitals facing the Philadelphia Flyers in the Winter Classic, but now there’s a new rumor.

That’s right, the Washington Capitals will be facing the Chicago Blackhawks in the Winter Classic next season. This would be Chicago’s third outdoor game and the Washington Capitals’ second, having played in the Winter Classic in Pittsburgh.

I love this matchup for several reasons. First off, I finally get to see a Winter Classic in DC. DC has deserved one for quite some time, and our patience has been rewarded. Secondly, this is a great matchup. Alex Ovechkin gets to square off against two of the NHL’s top stars in Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. 24/7 should be a ton of fun, and the game should be even more entertaining.

While a matchup with the Flyers or Rangers or even the Blue Jackets would have made sense from a rivalry standpoint, I think the Flyers-Capitals rivalry has been beaten into the ground enough as is. I would rather kick myself than watch another Capitals-Rangers game. While I do love Lumbus dearly, they don’t have the drawing power necessary. The Blackhawks, however, do.

The venue has not been determined yet, but possibilities include Nationals Park, RFK Stadium, Fed Ex Field, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium.
