Alex Ovechkin is Gliding Through

We all know that Alex Ovechkin doesn’t play defense.  The last defensive coach that came through the Nation’s Capitals; Dale Hunter had some issues with Ovechkin.  Barry Trotz is a similar-minded coach preaching already that defense is the new offense.  We have already questioned and looked at will Ovechkin play defense, will he be a coach killer for Trotz, will they butt heads? A number of questions have come up between their chemistry and how it will affect ice time and play.

Trotz came out and stated that Ovechkin needs to change his game a little bit, but it wasn’t really in the defensive  department.

“Alex has got a bit too much glide in his game,” said Trotz. “When you’re standing still you’re really easy to cover.”

Trotz wants Ovi to be moving a lot more so that when the Capitals do regain possession with the puck, Ovechkin will be in a better spot to make a play and have a bit more speed going in that direction, rather than just gliding through and then having to pick up speed quickly.  This may also play into getting Ovechkin to play defense.  If he is in the area, why not.

“Then you have some options,” said Trotz. “I think if he gets a little less glide in his game that he’ll be as dynamic and hard to handle as he ever was.”

Will Ovi put his glide away and actually start skating when he doesn’t have the puck?
