The Washington Capitals have announced that they have agreed to a two-year deal with free agent goaltender Justin Peters. Peters spent the last five seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. He is expected to be Braden Holtby‘s backup goalie. The two year deal is worth a total of $1,900,000. His AAV is $950,000.
In 68 career NHL games, Justin Peters has a 22-31-8 record, a 90.5% career save percentage, and a career GAA of 3.05, though it was 2.50 last season. I think Justin Peters is a very solid backup goalie and should keep the backup goalie spot warm for Philip Grubauer, who is expected to start in Hershey.
I think this further asserts Holtby as the clear starter for the Washington Capitals, at least for now. For the future? Who knows. When Peters has been healthy, he’s been a pretty good backup goalie.
