As we move into July, we also begin another chapter in the NHL Off-Season; Free Agency. Free Agency begins today and this day could bring a lot of information as to where the Washington Capitals may be headed. We do have a good idea as to what they want to do, but sometimes that might change.
With free agency opening today, I don’t know if we will see the Caps making moves right off the bat, but there is a possibility that they could make a splash right away. The goaltending market is saturated to say the least, but there is a limited defensman market right now, and with this I believe we see the Caps making a move on a couple of blue-liners right off the bat.
A couple of names that have been thrown around so far is former Penguin Matt Niskanen and with Todd Reirden coming over from the Pens it could be a possibility we see Niskanen in a Caps uniform soon. Christian Ehrhoff is is also on the market and could also see teams coming after him. He was not very productive in Buffalo, but who really was last year. Ehrhoff will be 32 in a couple of days but I think he might still have something in him.
Past defenseman and goaltending needs that the Washington Capitals are in need of, a forward could be in the mix as well but defenseman is the biggest need that needs to be the focus of the MacLellan and Trotz at this point. Trotz has said that they are willing to spend if they have to.
“I’m not privy to what number we’ll get to, but I do know that if we need to go to the cap, I think we’ll do that,” Coach Barry Trotz said. “This organization wants to win. So I don’t think that’s a question. They’ll be smart. It’s not going to be reckless or anything like that, I’m sure.”
This is good news to hear, money is no object to get the players they feel are going to make this team better.
