Detroit Red Wings Might Be Interested In Mike Green

According to rumors, the Detroit Red Wings might have interest in Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green. The interest makes a lot of sense. The Capitals would like to clear some cap space, while the Red Wings are desperately looking for a right-handed defenseman after failing to get one in free agency.

There are several things that must be considered with this interest. First of all, are the Washington Capitals even interested in trading Mike Green, let alone trading him to an Eastern Conference team? I believe that if the Capitals were to move Green, it would be to a Western Conference team. That said, if they were to trade him to an Eastern Conference team, it would probably be to a non-Metropolitan Division team. The Red Wings aren’t a member of the Metropolitan Division, so if the deal was right, I believe that the Capitals would move Green to Detroit.

Secondly, how interested in Mike Green are the Detroit Red Wings? I think that they are definitely interested in him if for no other reason because he’s a right-handed defenseman. Detroit has shown interest in Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres and Cody Franson of the Toronto Maple Leafs, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Detroit was interested in trading for Mike Green. Granted, he’d be just a one year fix, but that’s better than what they have going for them right now.

Thirdly, what kind of return could Washington Capitals fans expect if Mike Green was traded to Detroit? The Capitals would probably not even be interested in trading Green unless they could get a top 6 forward in return. The Red Wings might be able to help with that. Tomas Tatar would probably have to be involved in the trade.

Tatar has the potential to be a top 6 forward if he gets more playing time. He finished with 39 points (19 goals, 20 assists) last season while seeing a shade over 14 minutes of ice time per game. That’s better than any second line left wing option that the Capitals have. His Corsi % and Fenwick % are both extremely good, though that could be a result of his extremely high ZSS%. Regardless, Tatar is an extremely talented young forward, so I think the Capitals would require him to be involved in any package that Detroit presents for Mike Green.

If Detroit is in fact interested in trading for Mike Green, the Washington Capitals should certainly listen, especially if they are willing to include Tatar in the trade.
