With the departure of last years 2nd line center, Mikhail Grabovski, the Washington Capitals are left with a question mark that is a big one especially on that 2nd line.
4th line and maybe even the 3rd line, if a player leaves, it does present a problem but one that will not see a lot of ice time depending on injuries and match-ups.
Barry Trotz may have an answer to the 2nd line center question and it does not pertain to trading Mike Green in any shape of form. Although I think Green should be traded with t e amount of depth at the defensive position right now, and his salary of 6 million a year, he might be looking at the 6th spot on the blue line as a right handed shooter and Carlson and Niskanen ahead of him, but that is neither here nor there at this point.
Ok, back to the 2nd line center issue. Trotz has the idea that he is going to let the guys that “handle the puck and move the puck well, play in the middle. He is looking for Marcus Johansson as possibly the 2nd line center and having Evgeny Kutnetsov and Andre Burakovsky fight it out for the 3rd line center. Brooks Laich was also in consideration but Trotz hinted that he would probably stay on the wing.
“I’m going to let them play it out,” said Trotz. “We’re going to try to get the best three up the middle in terms of the people who are really good at distributing the puck and making things happen from the middle of the ice. After those three I think the fourth line will probably have a little more definition, probably more bite to it.”
Not a bad idea, but what do you guys think, put a puck handler in the middle to move the puck more efficiently? Could two of these three handle to faceoffs? What say you Caps fans?
