Washington Capitals Will Open 2014-2015 Season Against Canadiens

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Capitals know who they’re playing in the Winter Classic (the Chicago Blackhawks) and now they know who they will face in the first game of the season: The Montreal Canadiens.

That means stars P.K. Subban and Alex Ovechkin will be squaring off once again. It should be a fun match up.

From the Washington Capitals PR department:

The Washington Capitals will host the Montreal Canadiens at Verizon Center on Oct. 9 in the team’s opening game of the 2014-15 season, the National Hockey League and Washington Capitals announced today.

The Capitals are 6-1-0 all-time in season openers at Verizon Center and will face Montreal in its opening game of the season for the first time in franchise history. Washington posted a 2-1-0 record against the Canadiens last season and are 36-30-9-1 all-time against Montreal at home. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin registered four points (three goals, one assist) in three games against the Canadiens in 2013-14 and Braden Holtby posted a 2-0-0 record with one shutout, a 0.96 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage.

Next season will be the 40th anniversary of the Washington Capitals franchise. The rest of the schedule will be released tomorrow at 4:00 PM.
