The Washington Capitals have announced that they have a new third alternate jersey. It will replace the Washington Capitals white alternate jerseys that they have worn in recent years. More from the press release

The Washington Capitals will wear a third jersey modeled after the team’s original red jersey for select home games during the 2015-16 season, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

The primary color for the uniform is red and closely resembles the team’s jersey worn from 1974-75 through 1994-95. The original Capitals wordmark is featured on the front of the jersey with six stars above it and five stars beneath the numbers on each sleeve. The Capitals will wear blue pants and red helmets with their third jerseys. The new third jersey will replace the white third jersey the Capitals wore from 2011-12 to 2014-15.

The Capitals’ third jerseys will be available in October at the Verizon Center Team Store, Kettler Capitals Iceplex Team Store and online at shop.NHL.com.

The new Washington Capitals jersey is based off of this jersey that they wore until 1995.

Personally, I really love it. It’s a throwback to the Washington Capitals old jersey, which I actually think is the best jersey that they’ve ever worn. My only issue is why not scrap the normal away whites and make the Winter Classic whites from 2011 the regular away jersey? I actually wouldn’t mind if this was the normal home jersey and the 2011 Winter Classic whites were the normal away jersey. They could even use the 2015 Winter Classic jerseys as an alternate jersey. I really wish they’d make those an alternate jersey. Regardless, I’m really excited about the new jerseys and I can’t wait to buy one in October. What do you think Caps fans?
