The Washington Capitals got goals from five different players as the Caps rookies beat Tampa Bay’s rookies 5-2

After losing to the Florida Panthers in a shootout to start the Estero Rookie Tournament, the Washington Capitals bounced back to beat an impressive Tampa Bay Lightning rookie team 5-2. It was an impressive performance that saw the Washington Capitals get goals from Jakub Vrana, Nathan Walker, Connor Hobbs, Madison Bowey and Liam O’Brien.

With that win, the Washington Capitals rookies put themselves in a good position to win the tournament on Tuesday. Vrana got the scoring started as he showed off the moves that made him a first-round pick. Bowey cleared the puck from the defensive zone. Vrana gathered it and simply blew by his guy and juked Tampa’s goalie out of position to score the game’s first goal. The game’s second goal was scored in the second period by Hobbs, who also scored the lone Caps goal on Saturday against the Panthers.

Bowey, a second round pick of the Capitals back in 2013, added the third goal of the game on a power play bomb in the second period. Nathan Walker added the fourth goal of the game in the third period. After two power play goals by Tampa Bay, Liam O’Brien iced the game with an empty-netter.

The Washington Capitals prospects looked much better on Sunday than they did on Saturday. Their coaches certainly noticed.

“I thought we did a lot of good things that we talked about this morning and there were a number of guys that were really skating out there,” says [Hershey Bears head coach Troy Mann]. “I thought our passing was much crisper tonight.” – Dump ‘N Chase

Capitals goaltender Taran Kozun (from the WHL) did a very nice job in net for the Caps, only allowing two goals late in the third period against a very impressive Lighting squad.

With a win on Tuesday against the Nashville Predators, the Caps will win the Estero Rookie Tournament. The game starts at 10:00 AM.
