The Washington Capitals prospects not only defeated the Carolina Hurricanes yesterday, they flat out spanked them.

The Washington Capitals prospects will look to continue their strong play today at 2 p.m. eastern, 1 p.m. central against the Nashville Predators, the team hosting the Prospect Showcase.

The Capitals are coming off a 10-3 win over the Hurricanes in a game that saw Brian Pinho and Martin Fehervary light the lamp twice. Ilya Samsonov had a good outing in net, not only stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced in regulation but all five skaters in the shootout round. Pinho, Bobby Nardella and Joe Snively each had three points.

The Capitals scored three goals in the first and second periods and added four in the third while Shane Gersich was the lone Capitals player to score in the shootout round.

Connor McMichael had a great pass on Pinho’s first goal which opened up the scoring. Beck Malenstyn and Martin Fehervary added the other two first period goals. Fehervary used his speed and had a beautiful backhander which in my opinion was the play of the game.

Garrett Pilon, Pinho’s second goal and Herndon, VA native Joe Snively added goals in the second period. The Caps added four in the third from Bobby Nardella, Fehervary’s second goal and Shane Gersich lit the lamp in the third as the Capitals cruised to a 10-3 win.

Herhsey Bears head coach Spencer Carbery is the Capitals prospects bench boss for the tournament for the second year in a row. He told Mike Vogel of WashingtonCaps.com after the game:

"“I thought we did a lot of good things, including some of the stuff that we introduced the last couple of days, since getting together. So to start and for everybody to come together in the first game for these guys in several months, it was a good building block and a good start to the tournament.”"

Now the Capitals look to build on that performance this afternoon. The Predators are coming off a win of their own, a 4-1 final over the Tampa Bay lightning. Anthony Richard, Eeli Tolvanen, Adam Smith, and Rem Pitlick each found the back of the net. Goaltending duties were split between Connor Ingram and Ken Appleby and each netminder combined for the win.
