The Washington Capitals wrap up the third and final game of their season opening three game homestand on Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche. It marks their first contest against a Western Conference opponent since March 1, 2020. The Caps are 1-0-1 with three points which is good for fourth place in the Metropolitan Division.

On Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Lars Eller played in his 800th career game. A few nights prior on opening night against the New York Rangers in addition to Alex Ovechkin‘s milestone and Hendrix Lapierre‘s first goal, head coach Peter Laviolette became the winningest American born head coach in NHL history. Congrats to all.

It looks like based on Monday’s line rushes from practice we’ll get our first look at Connor McMichael this regular season. He took Lapierre’s spot centering the third line between Conor Sheary and T.J. Oshie.

Speaking of milestones, Ovechkin will play in his 1,200th career game while Garnet Hathaway will play in his 300th. This will be the first contest against Colorado since Feb. 13, 2020. In addition to three goals in his first two games this season, Ovechkin has scored a goal in five of his last 10 games against the Avalanche with five goals and five assists. He has four multi goal games during that span.

The Avs are 1-1-0 this season. They opened the season with a 4-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks before falling to the St. Louis Blues at home three nights later 5-3. Former Capital Andre Burakovsky has a goal and an assists while Nazem Kadri leads the team with three assists and four points to go along with a goal.

Nathan MacKinnon tested positive for COVID-19 but tested negative the next day so he made the trip. He just needs a negative test today to play. Jack Johnson recently tested negative twice and he is with the team expected to play.

Also please note it’s going to be a little tricky to watch the game as it won’t be on TV. The folks at RMNB, in particular Peter Hassett, put together a guide on how to watch the game. Initially it looked like you needed Hulu on top of ESPN plus or vice versa to watch the game in the D.C. area. That may not be the case after all.
