The Washington Capitals fell in overtime 4-3 to the Calgary Flames. It was a game that saw the Caps find themselves in a 3-0 hole before they came back with three straight goals in the second period. Nobody scored in the third and the Flames would win it in the three on three.

Andrew Mangiapane scored on the power play at 9:27. Elias Lindholm made it 2-0 at 10:59. At 17:18 the Flames added a shorthanded goal from Lindholm. 3-0 was the score after one with the Flames leading in shots 13-9. Vitek Vanecek was pulled from the game after the first. Ilya Samsonov took over the rest of the game in goal.

At 2:55 the Flames were on the power play but Evgeny Kuznetsov stole the puck, raced down the ice and scored his fourth goal of the season. It was his 427th career point, passing Kevin Hatcher for 13th overall on the Capitals franchise points list.

At 7:48 a snapshot from Martin Fehervary pulled the Caps within one. For Fehervary it was his first career NHL goal. It was assisted by Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin.

At 18:03, Ovechkin fired on in from his office real casually for his fifth goal of the season in as many games. He needs just seven goals to pass Brett Hull (741) for the fourth most goals in NHL history. 3-3 was the score after two periods with the Caps leading in shots 8-4.

The third period was scoreless with the Flames leading in shots 8-5 in the third. The game would head to overtime and just like the previous Saturday to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Caps fell short. They led in shots 3-2 in 3 on 3 play but the Flames had the edge 27-25 and would win the game with a goal Lindholm at 2:46 to complete the hat trick.
