The Washington Capitals made a roster move on their scheduled off day. They have sent rookie Axel Jonsson-Fjallby back to the Hershey Bears. AJF had one assist in eight games.

Since making his NHL debut on Nov. 8 against the Buffalo Sabres, the 23 year old ranks fourth on the Capitals in shot attempt percentage at five on five at 52.4 percent.

Prior to his recall, Jonsson-Fjallby recorded seven points in nine games with the Bears with three goals and four assists.

In 31 games with the Bears last season, AJF recorded 15 points with 10 goals and five assists and set an AHL career high in goals per game with 0.32. The six foot one, 189 pound forward also played in 26 games with Vastervik IK of the Swedish Hockey League, where he recorded 15 points with four goals and 11 assists.

In 117 career games with Hershey, the Stockholm, Sweden, native has recorded 48 points with 27 goals and 21 assists. AJF was selected by the Capitals with their fifth round pick at 147th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.

This roster move can mean one thing and one thing only, the Caps are getting healthy. AJF will not need waivers which is good news considering we almost lost him to those Sabres before claiming him right back.

The Caps have had Nicklas Backstrom on long term injured reserve since the start of training camp with a hip injury He has yet to skate with the team. Anthony Mantha is out for the long term with an upper body injury. Lars Eller, since we last checked, is quarantining in Anaheim as he entered COVID protocols.

Not only that but we didn’t get the homecoming of T.J. Oshie in Seattle. He’s day to day with a lower body injury. Maybe he’ll be back tomorrow night but we won’t know until morning skate if anything. Still AJF heading to Hershey means the Caps are going in the right direction health wise.
