The Washington Capitals made some roster moves ahead of their Thanksgiving Eve matchup with the Montreal Canadiens. T.J. Oshie heads back to injured reserve with a lower body injury. He suffered that on Saturday night against the San Jose Sharks and wasn’t able to face the Seattle Kraken on Sunday night.
Coming from the Bears is Michael Sgarbossa and Beck Malenstyn. Sgarbossa has 14 points with Hershey while Malenstyn has three. Malenstyn has a goal and two assists in 15 games and the 23 year old made his NHL debut on Nov. 20, 2019 against the New York Rangers and has played in three career games for the Capitals.
The six foot three, 200 pound left wing missed the 2020-21 season due to injury. In 135 career games with Hershey, Malenstyn has recorded 34 points with 15 goals and 19 assists. Malentsyn was selected with the Caps fifth round pick at 145th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. Malenstyn is a native of Delta, British Columbia.
Sgarbossa leads the Bears with 14 points and eight goals this season along with six assists. The 29 year old appeared in five games with the Capitals during the 2020-21 season, recording two assists. During the 2019-20 season, the six foot, 179 pound center played two games with Washington, making his Capitals debut on Nov. 20, 2019 against the Rangers.
Sgarbossa also recorded 40 points in 39 games with Hershey with 13 goals and 27 assists, ranking third on the team. Additionally, the Campbellville, Ontario, native led the Bears in points per game with 1.03, tied for the team lead in game winning goals with four and ranked tied for second in power play goals with five.
In 55 career NHL games with the Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, Anaheim Ducks, and Florida Panthers, Sgarbossa has recorded 12 points with two goals and 10 assists.
Sgarbossa and Malenstyn both took rushes on the fourth line at morning skate. Sgarbossa was centering it. Brett Leason was to his left with Malenstyn to his right.
