After a couple days off the Washington Capitals are back in action as they look to put a down January behind them and have a much better month of February. Tonight they’ll take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on the road with the season series split at 1-1-0 with each team winning on Washington’s home ice.

The Capitals held an optional morning skate today at PPG Paints Arena. Capitals Coach Peter Laviolette told the media that Vitek Vanecek will get the start in goal tonight while Nick Jensen is a game time decision. T.J. Oshie is out week to week.

On the Penguins side of things, Sidney Crosby is two goals shy of 500 in his career. Good on him and he’ll get it but hopefully not against the Caps. If he does though, cool. I respect it. Maybe Alex Ovechkin will score too to get closer to Jaromir Jagr.

The Caps have outscored the Penguins this season 8-5 and have earned points in seven of their last 10 games against the Pens with a 3-3-4 record. Among active players, Ovechkin’s 36 goals against Pittsburgh rank first and are tied for 15th in NHL history. Additionally, no active player with at least 25 games played against the Penguins has a higher points per game rate than Nicklas Backstrom’s 1.11.

Can the Caps start February off strong and get a big road win over their rivals? Here’s how to find out:
