The Washington Capitals return home looking to snap a two game losing streak when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs for Black History Night. It is the first time these teams have met since Oct. 29, 2019 which was a 4-3 overtime Caps win in Toronto.

The Caps have won three straight games against the Maple Leafs and each of the last three games have been one goal games. This stretch began on Feb. 21, 2019. Among active players in the NHL, Alex Ovechkin ranks first with 41 goals and 73 points against the Maple Leafs despite never playing in the same division as Toronto. That’s an average of 0.82 goals per game for Ovechkin against the Maple Leafs which is the highest rate he has against any Eastern Conference team.

Yesterday the Caps re assigned Vitek Vanecek and Pheonix Copley to the Hershey Bears. Vanecek was sent there on a conditioning loan and got the start in goal that night against the Utica Comets. Vanecek stopped 21 shots in the game and it is likely he will be sent back to the Caps to backup Ilya Samsonov tonight.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a 10-7 win on Saturday night over the Detroit Red Wings. On a night that most of the league was focused on the Stadium Series, that game would end up stealing the spotlight. The Maple Leafs are 34-14-4 which is good for 72 points and third in the Atlantic Division.

The Caps are 28-17-9 and dropped to the second Wild Card spot just a point behind the Boston Bruins, who just passed them. At 65 points, they’re up 10 points on the Columbus Blue Jackets who lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins last night.
