Last night during the game, the Washington Capitals made a move. They signed forward Sonny Milano to a one year, $750,000 contract. Milano recorded 34 points in 66 games with the Anaheim Ducks last season.

Today they placed him on waivers. If he clears tomorrow, which we should know around 2 p.m. eastern, he will report to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

The 26 year old had 14 goals and 20 assists last season with the Ducks. The six foot, 194 pound forward established single season career highs in assists, points, and games played and tied a career high in goals last season.

He has recorded 81 points with 36 goals and 45 assists in 197 career NHL games with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Anaheim.

The Massapequa, New York native was selected by Columbus in the first round at 16th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft. He has recorded 115 points with 40 goals and 75 assists in 166 career AHL games and won the Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters in 2016 over the Bears.

On the international stage Milano represented the United States at the 2014 U18 World Junior Championship as well as the 2015 and 2016 U20 World Junior Championships and the 2018 World Championship.

In the 2014 U18 World Junior Championship, Milano scored the gold medal clinching goal and additionally earned bronze medals at the 2016 U20 World Junior Championship and at the 2018 World Championships.

Here’s hoping he clears waivers and gives the upstart Bears a much needed boost. The Caps lost Axel Jonsson Fjallby and Brett Leason on waivers so this is a valuable replacement.

The Hershey Bears opened the season last night with a 3-1 win over the Utica Comets. Henrik Borgstrom, Mike Vecchione, and Riley Sutter had the goals. Zach Fucale made 19 saves on 20 shots.
