The Washington Capitals take on the Florida Panthers for the second of three meetings this season and it is a big one. Perhaps bigger than Saturday’s game but let’s not look that far.
The Capitals sit in the second and final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with a 28-22-6 record, good for 62 points. They trail the Pittsburgh Penguins by one point. Their opponent tonight is 27-24-6, good for 60 points, two points behind the Capitals. The Caps could enter Saturday’s Stadium Series match on the outside looking in for the playoff picture which could make that game even bigger and more of a must win. That is unless the Capitals win tonight of course.
The Caps fell to Florida 5-2 on Nov. 15 at FLA Live Arena in their only previous meeting this season. The Capitals and Panthers will conclude their season series on April 8 in Washington. The Capitals are 67-44-9-12 all time against the Panthers and have won two straight regular season games against Florida at home.
Tonight there will be a milestone for Nicolas Aube Kubel as he suits up for his 200th career game. The Caps will look to bounce back from a tough two losses in a row to the San Jose Sharks and the Carolina Hurricanes.
