Breaking down the odds of the Capitals in 2023 NHL Draft Lottery
The Washington Capitals won’t be in the playoffs but they have one unofficial playoff game next month. That is on May 8 when the NHL Draft Lottery takes place and the Caps have a six percent chance of landing Connor Bedard with the number one pick.
May 8 is on a Monday and it will air at 7 p.m. eastern on ESPN, Sportsnet and TVA Sports. It’ll determine the order of selection for the first 16 picks in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft. Participants include teams that didn’t make the playoffs or teams that acquired first round draft rights of those said non playoff teams.
Here are the official draft lottery odds of each of the 16 teams vying for the number one pick direct from a press release from the NHL:
Anaheim Ducks: 18.5 percent
Columbus Blue Jackets: 13.5 percent
Chicago Blackhawks: 11.5 percent
San Jose Sharks: 9.5 percent
Montreal Canadiens: 8.5 percent
Arizona Coyotes: 7.5 percent
Philadelphia Flyers: 6.5 percent
Washington Capitals: 6 percent
Detroit Red Wings: 5 percent
St. Louis Blues: 3.5 percent
Vancouver Canucks: 3 percent
Ottawa Senators* who will transfer pick to Arizona if it’s not a top five pick: 2.5 percent
Buffalo Sabres: 2 percent
Pittsburgh Penguins: 1.5 percent
Nashville Predators: 0.5 percent

The odds for the remaining teams will increase on a proportionate basis for the 2nd Lottery Draw, based on which team wins the 1st Lottery Draw.The 14 teams not selected in the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery will be assigned the remaining 2023 NHL Draft selections (among 1 through 16 in the first round), in inverse order of regular-season points.NHL Central Scouting will release its final rankings for the 2023 NHL Draft on Tuesday, April 18.The 2023 NHL Scouting Combine, showcasing the top draft-eligible North American and international prospects, will be held from June 4-10 at KeyBank Center and LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo, N.Y.The 2023 NHL Draft will take place at Bridgestone Arena, home of the Nashville Predators, over two days. Round 1 will be held on Wednesday, June 28, followed by Rounds 2-7 on Thursday, June 29.
