Washington Capitals 2002 NHL Draft: Second Round

The Washington Capitals had one pick in the second round of the 2002 NHL Draft. It was the 59th overall pick. With that pick, they selected goaltender Maxime Daigneault. He wound up leaving the Caps organization in 2007 and never played a single game in the NHL.

In hindsight, the Capitals really should have drafted defenseman Johnny Boychuk. He would have provided much more value than Daigneault. Granted, he was a late bloomer. Still, imagine the Caps had they been able to add Boychuk.

Ironically, they could have also drafted forward Tomas Fleischmann. Of course, the Detroit Red Wings would wind up trading him to the Caps for Robert Lang. Who knows who the Red Wings would have traded to the Caps for Lang had the Caps drafted Fleischmann?
