Player: John Carlson

Contract: 6 years, $23.8 million ($3.966m AAV)

Expires: 2018

The going rate for top pairing defensemen these days, or really top players at any position, is through the roof. John Carlson is a player that is still on the rise, but has already made his mark as a prolific number one defenseman on the best team in the league. Prior to his injury, he was on a career-high pace in points. At just a tad under $4 million per year, that contract is not only one of the best on the Washington Capitals, but one of the best in the league.

Carlson plays top minutes in every single situation. He anchors one of the top power plays in the league, plays big minutes on the penalty kill, and is utilized alongside Brooks Orpik (when healthy) as the top pairing at five-on-five. As Alzner said, it is a little bit scary to think about what money Carlson might be getting in a few years. Show some love to George McPhee for getting him locked up at this price for six years.
