Top Five Contracts on the Washington Capitals
Player: Nicklas Backstrom
Contract: 10 years, $67 million ($6.7m AAV)
Expires: 2020
The fact that Nicklas Backstrom, unarguably one of the top centers in the entire league, is locked up until 2020 at a cap hit of $6.7 million while players at or below his level are asking for $10 million or above, is simply not fair. Frequently named as one of the most underrated players in the entire league, he also has one of the most underrated contracts, one that is the best value on the entire Washington Capitals team.
Backstrom has been attached to the hip with the best goal scorer in the league for years, and for good reason. He is finally being rewarded for his consistently great play with an invite to the 2016 NHL All-Star Game, a first for the Swede. He is a point-per-game player, a complete number one center that plays top minutes in every situation. This is the best contract on the Washington Capitals, and it isn’t really close.
