Thursday it was Washington Capitals Jakub Vrana’s diving goal that was the highlight in the Czech Republic game at IIHF Worlds. On Friday, it was Dmitrij Jaskin’s two goals in Czech’s 8-0 win over Italy.
Washington Capitals right winger Dmitrij Jaskin was brought in for some bottom six depth last season. He played in 37 games and recorded eight points (2 goals, 6 assists) but other than the regular season finale hadn’t suited up for a Capitals game since Feb. 17.
In Friday’s Czech Republic win in the IIHF World Championship, Jaskin’s two goals were part of an eight-goal barrage on Team Italy. There was only one goal scored in the first period from Milan Gulas. A four-goal second signaled the night was on.
First it was Radko Gudas, then Michael Frolik and Jan Kovar. Jaskin assisted on the Gudas goal which was pretty sick. Think half court shot in the NBA but on the ice. That’s basically what happened.

Jaskin dished it to Gudas and he shot it from beyond center ice near the boards right by the Team Italy Bench. Then Jaskin got a quick pass from Filip Chytil and quickly snipped it with 5:43 left in the second. It would be 5-0 heading into the second intermission.
The Czechs added three more goals in the third. After Dominik Simon made it 6-0, Jaskin added his second goal of the game with a slick wrister right into the corner of the net. Michal Repik and David Musil were credited with the helpers.
Frolik added his second goal of the game and the Czech Republic completed the 8-0 shutout. The Czech’s outshot Team Italy by a whooping 48-15.
Jaskin had a three-point night on four shots in 18 shifts and an ice time of 14:19. Jaskin was also a +8. Vrana has scored three goals in the IIHF but had a quiet day. V finished with just one shot in 15:13 on 19 shifts.
There is no telling on whether or not Jaskin will be back with the team next season. After the trade for Carl Hagelin, Jaskin appeared in just one game and with free agency looming, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan might not have enough money to bring him back.
But it’s sports and sometimes surprises happen.
Dmitrij Jaskin, Jakub Vrana and Czech Republic’s next game is on Sunday against Austria. You can also catch fellow Capitals Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitry Orlov on Saturday in Team Russia‘s game against Latvia.
