Back at Arlington, VA numerous Washington Capitals players are gearing up for the upcoming 2019-20 season. Alex Ovechkin is back and he left the ice in pain on Monday morning.

The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir was on the scene and reported that Washington Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin went down during the late summer informal skate scrimmage and was in a lot of pain.

In particular it was his knee as the captain put all his weight on his right leg and none on his left as he was coming off the ice. As he came down Ovechkin was even yelling in pain.

A Capitals spokesman told El-Bashir while Ovechkin was getting looked at that the injury didn’t appear to be too serious. Amazingly, he came back onto the ice. Russian machine never breaks am I right?

Ovechkin the media that he’s OK and also explained the cut on his nose.

“Yeah it’s okay. Last night I fell off bike (why there’s a cut on his nose),” said Ovechkin.

Alex Ovechkin is okay and the Capitals are slowly gearing up for training camp which begins this Thursday with off-ice testing before the on-ice workouts take place. If you can’t get enough of Ovi now he’s got his own cereal. “Ovi O’s” will hit the shelves at local D.C., Maryland, and Virginia Giant food stores.

Ovechkin embarks on a huge and highly anticipated season. He’s trended upward and come a long way since his 33 goal season that was sandwiched in between five seasons where he scored 49 or more goals.

With 658 in his career and only 33 years old, going on 34 of course when it’s his birthday, Ovechkin is determined to chase the Great One’s record.

The last two seasons saw Ovechkin score 49 and 51 goals, respectively. Will he have enough left in the tank to catch up with Wayne Gretzky? With a few more seasons of 40-50 goals under his belt in the foreseeable future, it’s a possibility.

Ovechkin enters his 15th season and he’ll look to lead the Capitals to another Stanley Cup and one of those seasons that could be the last for the full long-time core of Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Braden Holtby. He’s determined to make it count.

One week from today, the preseason opens at Capital One Arena as Washington will play host to the Chicago Blackhawks. If Ovechkin isn’t playing, thankfully it’s not because he was hurt from today’s summer workout.
