The Washington Capitals prospects have one more game left of the rookie tournament before they assemble with the veterans for training camp this weekend.

The Washington Capitals rookies will conclude this round-robin style tournament today against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

After winning the opening game 10-3 over the Carolina Hurricanes, the Capitals dropped the second game to the host Nashville Predators and will look to end this rookie tournament on a high note with a win today.

Defenseman Martin Fehervary and Brian Pinho each scored twice in the first game. Last season, Fehervary recorded seven points in 45 games (1 goal, 6 assists) for HV-71 of the Swedish Hockey League.

The 2018 second rounder, taken at 46th overall also was a team captain for Team Slovakia during the World Junior Championship and registered five points in five games (one goal, four assists).

He was recognized in the tournament as a top three player. He also represented Slovakia in the 2019 IIHF World Championship and had an assist in seven games.

Perhaps Brian Pinho has been the Player of the Tournament. He leads all Caps prospects with three goals and is second with four points. Last season Pinho scored 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 73 games with the Hershey Bears.

The 2013 sixth round, 174th overall pick came up clutch in the playoffs scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the first round.

Pinho registered 115 points (39 goals, 75 assists) in 156 career NCAA games and helped Providence to the NCAA championship during the 2014-15 season.

His best college season came in 2017-18 when he was named captain. Pinho recorded 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in 40 games and was a member of Hockey East’s Third All-Star Team and was named Hockey East’s Best Defensive Forward.

Capitals prospect coach Spencer Carbery, who during the fall is the head coach of the Hershey Bears, believed that his players could’ve played better in Sunday’s game. He told Mike Vogel of WashingtonCaps.com:

"“I didn’t think we were quite as sharp in a lot of different areas. I didn’t notice our speed as much, we obviously spent a lot more time in the defensive zone. Call it what you want; maybe a little bit of fatigue. We’re a much younger team than the Nashville side, so we just didn’t look nearly as sharp in a lot of different areas.”"

The Capitals got goals in Sunday’s game from Pinho as well as Kody Clark, the latter opening the scoring in the first period.
