Alex Ovechkin

Unable to get it done at home, Alex Ovechkin takes the quest for 700 goals on the road over the next three games beginning tonight in Colorado. Once again NBC is picking it up nationally as the game will be broadcasted on NBCSN in addition to NBC Sports Washington. Tonight is the 888th game on the NHL calendar. In Ovechkin’s career, it’s his 1,140th game. If he gets it it would be the second-fewest games required to reach the milestone in NHL history behind none other than Wayne Gretzky who did it in 886 games. Gretzky and Brett Hull are the only players to have done it in fewer than 1,200 games.

It’s been 150 games since Ovechkin scored his 600th goal and if he scores tonight it would take the fewest games to make the leap from 600 to 700. Yes fewer than Gretzky. Ovechkin ranks fifth in the NHL with 0.61 goals-per game in his career.

Per the game notes, Ovechkin can do something only LeBron James and Kobe Bryant have done, reach a career-scoring milestone before the benchmark age of 35. Ovechkin definitely has a little bit of both athletes in him on the ice.
