We don’t know when the NHL Draft is, not yet anyway, but like our football counterparts it should be an exciting event. Let’s have some fun and speculate on whom the Washington Capitals could draft.
The Washington Capitals have five picks in 2020. Who will be in the mix for the future of the team looking to fill in the tall order of success and excellence from Alex Ovechkin and company?
We took a look at Draft Site to learn about the names of who the Capitals could add to the prospect mix to someday be an impact on the team. Short term you may see them in Chocolatetown thanks to the Capitals and Hershey Bears extending their affiliation agreement.
First round, 29th overall: Marat Khusnutdinov

Marat Khusnutdinov is a center from Vityaz Podolsk HC. This season he scored 13 goals and added 25 assists for 38 points. Draftin Europe describes him as a “small (five foot nine) two-way center.. great skater.. uses his quickness to win pucks all over the ice, showing skills and smarts once he gets possession.”
Third round, 72nd overall: Maxim Groshev
Maxim Groshev is a right wing from Nizhnekamsk of the KHL. He scored one goal and six assists in 36 games with them this season. Groshev had also represented Russia internationally in the World Junior Championships.
Note: this is a conditional pick. If the Caps win the Stanley Cup the pick would belong to the Arizona Coyotes. If the draft is indeed going to be held in early June like the rumors say, then this pick is probably Washington’s since the Cup has yet to be awarded.
Fourth round, 122nd overall: Pavel Gogolev
Pavel Gogolev is a right wing from the Guelph Storm of the OHL. In 63 games he scored 45 goals and added 51 assists for 96 points. Now that’s pretty explosive.
Fifth round, 153rd overall: Ben King
Ben King is a right wing from the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL. In 46 games this season he scored 16 goals and added 22 assists for 38 points.
The general takeaway here is that the Capitals are going to likely stock up on forwards in the upcoming draft. Like we said, we don’t know when the official date is yet or even if the season will continue. Regardless, we’ll have plenty of pre draft content for you and more.
