Prior to this past season, Ponomaryov registered 29 points in 37 games in Russia’s junior league MHL in 2018-19.

He’s been known as a reliable player who will step in and fill a role if anybody is injured, kind of like his teammate Mavrik Bourque when he went down with a leg injury.

Ponomaryov also has a heavy shot and shows great deception with and without the puck. When handling the puck, he handles it with ease like Evgeny Kuznetsov.

On the other side of the ice, Ponomaryov isn’t afraid to lay out a hit, or poke check the puck away from an attacking player. He’s very patient in his vision and has the potential to become a two-way center in the NHL.
