The best angle for a 3-part documentary on the Washington Capitals.

If looking at things that happened during the Washington Capitals 2019-20 regular season, the best angle for a 3-part documentary would be Alex Ovechkin‘s chase to 700 goals. Here’s how it would all go down if you were watching it unfold.

Part one: Opening Night

A hook leading into Opening Night would show clips of the team winning the Stanley Cup and then a quick highlight montage of what went down last season ending in a heartbreaking loss to the Hurricanes. You jump right into the locker room and hear the disappointment in the player’s expressions to the media.

Fast forward to opening night and it’s not the Caps who are the ones raising the Stanley Cup banner but rather their opponent that night the St. Louis Blues. The Caps were down 2-0 but Ovechkin would get them on the board for his first goal of the season. In the second Dmitry Orlov tied it and finally, Jakub Vrana came through with the game-winner getting the season started on the right foot.

Next is a quick highlight of the win over the New York Islanders before the scene shifts to Capital One Arena for the home opener. Ovechkin arrives on the red carpet with Captain, the team dog as a cute little puppy.

Next thing you know we see highlights of the Caps hot start to the season before it shifts to part two.

Part two: Ovechkin’s hot streak to get him within two of 700

In a seven-game stretch from Jan. 13 through Feb. 4 Ovechkin scored 14 goals. It got him to within 798 and it made Caps tickets the hottest in town as fans flocked to get their chance to see history.

In that stretch, Ovechkin had three hat tricks. He had one at home against the New Jersey Devils, one the very next game at the Islanders and then again at the end of the stretch against the Los Angeles Kings. The one against the Kings, believe it or not, was his first natural hat trick.

Part three: The 700th goal and the aftermath

The third part shows Ovechkin’s five game goal-less drought before he scores against the Montreal Canadiens at home to pull him within one. The scene shifts to New Jersey where on a historic afternoon at Prudential Center, Ovechkin finally gets his 700th goal.

Next thing you know we’re at Ovechkin’s pregame ceremony where the documentary is set to end. Though the real star of that ceremony was his son Sergei. Ovechkin scored in that contest against the Winnipeg Jets and then added five more where the documentary ends with the season being paused.

Before we roll to credits though we get a behind the scenes look at Ovechkin training during the quarantine before he finally gets back to MedStar Capitals Iceplex to train with his teammates before the season hopefully gets back.
