Should the Washington Capitals pursue Henrik Lundqvist?

It was news that rocked the hockey world yesterday.

Henrik Lundqvist, legendary goaltender of the New York Rangers, was bought out. Now he’s a free agent joining another team and the rumors have it he could go to the Washington Capitals. But is he a fit?

Is he comfortable being a backup goaltender? Is he willing to sign probably a league minimum? Those are questions that will be answered in the coming weeks.

I think Lundqvist would be a good fit on the Capitals. He can be a mentor to Ilya Samsonov and back him up and perhaps make a tight goalie tandem. With Braden Holtby set to hit the open market, the Caps need a guitar playing goalie and Lundqvist meets that criteria.

More from Rumors

Caps twitter went into a frenzy, already tweeting out pictures of a Lundqvist Capitals jersey but bad news for Samsonov, it would be likely he gives up his number 30 unless Henrik is willing to switch to a new number.

Of course it’ll look weird but hey we’re already accustomed to seeing Carl Hagelin in a Caps sweater. Also, it’s 2020, the weirdest year yet. Samsonov is the future but the Caps need a veteran to back him up. Asking a guy like Vitek Vanecek to do it with zero NHL experience is a big risk I don’t see the team willing to take.

The Caps are in win now mode and Lundqvist has the resume to be a proven veteran to backup Samsonov. The Caps would also give Lundqvist a chance to win the Stanley Cup he deserves. He almost won it with the Rangers in 2014. Even tough I’m not a Rangers fan, I felt bad seeing Lundqvist on the bench after they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Even though Lundqvist has left New York, well unless he signs with the Islanders (that would be weirder) he will always be a legend in Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. Joining a team like the Caps will be another big city willing to embrace him.

Lundqvist went 10-12-3 in 30 games in his final season in Manhattan. He went 0-2 inside the bubble. In the regular season he had a 3.16 goals against average and a 905 save percentage. In his career with the Blueshirts which spans for 15 seasons, Lundqvist is 459-310-96 with a  2.43 goals against average and a .918 save percentage.
