Washington Capitals select Oskar Magnusson with final pick
The Washington Capitals weren’t quite done with the draft yet.
In a rare occurrence, the Washington Capitals made a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Caps acquired their seventh round pick at 211th overall in 2020 in exchange for Washington’s seventh round pick in 2021. The Capitals used that pick to select Oskar Magnusson.
Magnusson is a center and right winger from the Malmo Redhawks in the SHL. He played parts of two seasons including this current one with the Malmo senior team in the SHL. He is a five foot 10, 166 pound athlete that was ranked 43rd by NHL Central Scouting among European skaters.
Christoffer Hedlund, director of European Scouting at Elite Prospect said this about Magnusson. “Intense and hard working winger with some skill. Plays a speedy game although with average skating technique. Good shot and has steadily improved his playmaking abilities during the season. Does not shy away from the dirty areas of the ice.”

In 2019-20, Magnusson has played three games so far with the Redhawks in the SHL after he played the majority of last season with Sweden’s U20 junior league. In that league, he scored 22 goals and recorded 48 total points in 38 games.
Elite Prospects had this to say about him in their draft guide:
"Magnusson uses tempo-swings to beat opponents on the outside before crashing the net with the puck. He quickly spots passing lanes and takes advantage of them. He’s also not afraid to challenge defenders 1-on-1 in big-ice situations, displaying a high level of creativity and confidence in his abilities."

The Caps conclude the 2020 NHL Draft with five picks. They selected all forwards with four of those picks while going with a goaltender. No defensemen were selected. Overall it was a pretty solid draft class and we’ll have plenty of post draft content for you soon.
