Along with the jersey, the Washington Capitals released this epic video.

We all know about the Washington Capitals reverse retro jerseys by now as it’s been the hottest topic in hockey all week long. If the original announcement didn’t fire you up enough, perhaps this video will.

Paying tribute to the 90’s, the Caps released a throwback style video featuring AOL dial up internet as the user searches the web. We see a glimpse of what the old Capitals website looked like when you were buying tickets back in the day. We also see highlights on an old fashioned TV from that 1997-98 season.

There is plenty of footage of Peter Bondra and Alex Ovechkin scoring goals while wearing the white screaming eagle jersey. Later in the video, the Caps showed your tweets on your reaction to the jersey including Alex Ovechkin’s comment “the best one my first year.”

The AOL style montage is also a nod to team owner Ted Leonsis, who was the president of AOL. That’s where he made the big bucks. Per Wikipedia, AOL saw their membership explode to around 800,000 members to over eight million. In that stretch, the company saw its revenue increase annually from $100 million to $1.5 billion.

The Caps media guide mentions that Leonsis spent 14 years at AOL, serving as president of America Online Services Company, president of AOL Studios, president of AOL Web Properties, vice chairman and president of AOL Audience Business and vice chairman emeritus.

Uner Leonsis’ leadership, the company recorded their greatest levels of innovation and growth and in May 2010, AOL named a central office tower The Leonsis Creative Center in honor of him. Leonsis retired from active management of AOL in 2006.

Peter Bondra commented on the new sweaters on Twitter, tweeting, “these are fire (emoji). My new favorite red.”

My favorite part about the video is when they showed a shot of the crowd at the MCI Center all decked out in white and then flipping to the modern fans rocking the red at Capital One Arena.

I also like the part where they show flashes of red on Ovechkin’s “The Goal” that he scored in his rookie year in 2006 that even made Wayne Gretzky look up at the scoreboard to watch it again.

You can purchase the Reverse Retro jersey starting on Dec. 1. The price is still unknown but I’d imagine it’s the same as an authentic jersey. It’ll be available at the team stores at MedStar Capitals Iceplex and Capital One Arena and you can sign up here to learn more about where and when you can buy them.
