Grading Martin Fehervary’s performance with the Washington Capitals.

Martin Fehervary only played in six games for the Washington Capitals. But in our report card series we figured we might as well include everyone and Fehervary stepped up in his short role on the defense.

When the season ended, it looked like Fehervary might get a big role but with the Caps offseason additions the blue line is looking pretty crowded. Still Fehervary is a young defenseman, 21 years old to be exact, with a lot of potential.

The Caps selected Fehervary in the second round at 46th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut last season when the Caps opened the year against the St. Louis Blues. He would play in the first three games of the season and then later get a look at the NHL ice in February.

Fehervary recorded his first NHL assist on Feb. 8th in a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at Capital One Arena. His last regular season game was on Feb. 10th in a contest against the New York Islanders. The defenseman also got a look in two playoff games.

Fehervary played in the Caps round robin win over the Boston Bruins as well as Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal against the Islanders where the Caps fell in overtime.

In the regular season, Fehervary averaged 15:59 minutes of ice time, was a -2, had six penalty minutes, 14 hits and two blocked shots. In the playoffs, he averaged 13:23 minute s of ice time, had eight hits and one block.

Fehervary’s advanced stats are pretty good too. He had a 53.64 percent Corsi For percentage, a 54.55 Fenwick For percentage, but a bad 41.18 High Danger Chances For. In the playoffs, he had the second highest Corsi For percentage at 58.14 percent. He also had a Fenwick For percentage of 51.72 percent, but a bad 40 percent High Danger Chances For as the Caps were unable to generate much offense against the Isles.

Grade C+: Fehervary’s advanced stats were above average except for the high danger chances which he’ll hopefully improve on to get a B if he sees any NHL action this upcoming season.

It might be easier said than done. We all know how crowded the blue line will look with the new offseason additions. Fehervary will have to earn a spot on the roster or step in when a player struggles or injures themselves. Still, it’s not impossible. Fehervary’s got potential.
