Grading T.J. Oshie’s fifth season with the Washington Capitals.

T.J. Oshie, like Alex Ovechkin, is well into his 30s with the Washington Capitals and is showing no signs of aging. He played in all 69 games with the Caps and scored 26 goals, one more than he did the previous season. He also added 23 assists for 49 points.

Oshie had a 49.8 percent shot attempt percentage, a 49.3 percent expected goal percentage and a 52.3 percent goal percentage. After an injury in the playoffs the previous year, Oshie bounced back stronger than ever. We hope he’ll be with the Caps for life and not stolen by the Seattle Kraken.

The trade for Oshie was what won the Caps the Stanley Cup in my honest opinion. He has pretty much done everything asked and expected of him since joining the Capitals and more. He continues to show durability and passion and is the heart and soul of the Caps offense.

Oshie would’ve had a 30 goal season at least if not for the novel coronavirus pandemic. Although Oshie put up a lot of goals he was still below 50 percent in shot attempts and expected goals.

Oshie’s advanced stats were okay at best. He had a 49.51 percent Corsi For percentage, a 50.37 percent Fenwick For percentage, and a 48.41 percent High Danger Chances For percentage.

In the playoffs Oshie had three goals. He had a 51.52 percent Corsi For percentage, a 52.70 percent Fenwick For percentage, but a 20 percent High Danger Chances For percentage.

Overall the numbers were up and down for Oshie but mostly up. He definitely needs to play with Nicklas Backstrom a lot as well as Jakub Vrana. Next season we projected him to once again be on the second line with those two. Still though, Oshie’s a threat on whatever line he is playing.

Grade A: Oshie had up and down advanced stats but his regular stats were enough for him to ace the whacky season that just concluded. Expect Oshie to take the second line and perhaps jump to the first line if there’s a struggle.

Oshie will have a new coach in Peter Laviolette who will expect his guys to reach their ceiling. He will also have his linemates looking to bring the best out of him. It is unlikely Oshie will have a 30 goal season this upcoming year but anything in the mid to high 20s is still considered a success. He also gets an A for the goal of the year against the Boston Bruins.
