Washington Capitals: 3 big reasons they landed at No. 168 on FanSided 250
How the Washington Capitals made the FanSided 250.
The Washington Capitals have made the FanSided 250 once again. This year they landed at number 168 including third in the NHL behind the Vegas Golden Knights and the reigning Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
FanSided 250 is a look at the 250 hottest fandoms of the year when it comes to sports and entertainment. The Washington Wizards and Juan Soto also made the cut, so DC Sports represent.
The Caps got 48.5 percent of the vote, a search score of 31.1 while having over 2.4 million social media follows. It just goes to show Caps fans are the best of the best when it comes to hockey fandoms. Here’s three reasons why they made it.
#3 Lynda Carter
The number three reason is the original Wonder Woman is a huge Caps fan. FanSided wrote:
“When Washington Capitals fans put on their favorite gear, they should know they’re not alone. In fact, they’re wondrously not alone because Lynda Carter has proven herself to be one of the biggest Caps fans in the world. When Wonder Woman is standing among you, that’s how you know a fandom is truly awesome.”
Check her out rocking the new Caps reverse retro jersey. Fire!
#2 Alex Ovechkin
If there is any reason plenty of butts are in the seats when the Caps play home and away, it’s because fans want a chance to watch greatness before their eyes. That’s what an athlete like Alex Ovechkin provides who’s only once in a generation.
There is no doubt all eyes will be on Ovechkin as he enters a big season. With 706 goals, he has tunnel vision in his chase for Wayne Gretzky’s unbreakable goal scoring record. He scored his 700th goal earlier this year and who knows if we’ll ever see another 700 goal scorer again. Those come rarely.
Ovechkin is coming off a 48 goal season that would’ve been a 56 goal season if the league didn’t pause due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Having just turned 35 people are wondering if he can keep up the momentum. I say not to bet against the great eight.
After a 33 goal season in 2016-17, Ovechkin has since led the league in goals scored. This came after some pundits said the team should trade him. Now that is simply foolish.
There was only one thing that eluded him and now that he finally won a Stanley Cup in 2018, the sky is the limit.
#1 Caps fans are simply awesome
The number one reason the Caps landed on FanSided 250 and ranked as high as they did in the NHL is simply that Caps fans are the best in hockey. Period.
We have honestly been through a lot. We tried things in the past that didn’t work. We suffered some dark days and even darker playoff exits once we tasted regular season success. All the pain though and the support through thick and thin made it all the more rewarding when the team finally won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
One of my favorite parts about attending a Caps game when they’re down or when the game is tied is when the whole arena comes together to shout “Unleash the Fury”. There was one occasion where I was at a game and the Caps were down by two. Once fury was unleashed the Caps came back and scored three unanswered goals. Hearing that from the bench can give you a spark.
It’s disappointing that there won’t be fans to begin the season but the team made the right call as we all have to continue to stay in to stop the spread. Hopefully down the line later in the season fans will once again be allowed back inside Capital One Arena. We all can’t wait for that day.
