Alex Ovechkin is in for a big season with the Washington Capitals.

Alex Ovechkin enters the final year of his 13 year, $124 million contract that he signed with the Washington Capitals back in 2008. It’s crazy we’ve reached this point and it’s amazing how far Ovechkin has come since signing that deal.

Ovechkin will be due for a new contract and it’ll likely be his last contract he signs. If a deal doesn’t get done, he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent in the middle of July.

Ovechkin said in an interview with Russian network Sport24 that he will negotiate the contract all by himself with no agent, similar to what Nicklas Backstrom did a season ago.

Before we worry about contract stuff let’s learn why Ovechkin will have an MVP season.

#3 He’s got the drive

If there’s one trait that Ovechkin has that stands out from the rest of the competition, it’s his competitive drive and desire to win. He has that look in his eyes that opponents fear when he steps onto the ice. He uses that along with his natural gift of goal scoring to dominate the league. He’s been that way ever since he was drafted first overall.
