Even though Alex Ovechkin was robbed from a 30 goal season (thanks COVID), the Washington Capitals superstar still put up impressive offensive numbers and up until his injury was within striking distance of the league lead.

Ovechkin finished with 24 goals and 18 assists for 42 points in 45 games played. It was the final season of his massive 13 year contract. Nobody knows what he’ll do next but both himself, the team and the faithful are hopeful he will finish his career with the Caps.

Ovechkin’s contract was worth $124 million. The Caps were eliminated in five games to the Boston Bruins and some pessimistic folks believed it was his last home game in a Capitals sweater.

Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan told the media in his season ending Zoom press conference in an article from Samantha Pell of The Washington Post (subscription required):

"“We want him to be happy about this contract. We want him to finish his career here. He’s defined our organization, so it’s important for us for him to feel comfortable with what he’s doing, for him to feel comfortable with the contract, for the direction of the team. We don’t want to end the relationship, I guess is the point. We want him to go out the way he wants to go out.”"

Ovechkin will negotiate the contract by himself without an agent. They could be talking as we speak but nothing has been revealed. I’d expect a deal to be done at some point after the Seattle expansion draft so the Caps can protect an extra forward.

T.J. Oshie added:

"“When you think of the Washington Capitals, you think of Alex Ovechkin. So, no, I don’t see it. He’s our captain. … I think Ovi loves it here. I think Ovi wants to stay here forever. I think they want him here forever, so I’m hopeful that something will get done that’s fair for both sides.”"

When Ovechkin last signed a deal, he had the help of his mom Tatyana negotiating the contract. Now Ovechkin is talking with GMBM and team owner Ted Leonsis.

Leonsis added:

"“Alex knows that if he plays five more years, 10 more years, whatever it is, we’ve got his back. Our commitment to him is to continue to have great teams. We’ll spend to the cap. We’ll try to win championships. And that’s what he’s focused on because that will be his legacy.”"

This story will certainly be the hottest one in Washington this summer. Here’s hoping they can hammer out a deal so Ovechkin can finish his career here.
