Washington Capitals Highlights: Top 3 best video highlights of 2021
The Washington Capitals finished the 2020-21 season at second place in the East Division with a record of 36-15-5.
The Capitals advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but fell short of reaching the Finals after being eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the First Round.
Despite a season left with many questions unanswered, the Capitals managed to give fans a good season and provided highlights along the way.
With that said, here are the three best highlights from the Capitals this past season.
Craig Anderson steps in for an injured Vitek Vanecek
In Game 1 in the First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek went down with an injury during the first period against the Boston Bruins.
Veteran goaltender Craig Anderson was thrusted onto the ice and did not disappoint.
The Bruins with a 1-0 lead before Anderson entered would only find the net once more this game.
Anderson saved 21 of 22 shots taken and the Capitals would win 3-2 in overtime.
While the veteran is not the long term answer, Anderson can provide a spark for the team when needed.
Alex Ovechkin surpasses Phil Esposito (sixth) on the all-time goals list
Left winger Alex Ovechkin continued to leave fans in awe as he builds on his future hall of fame resume.
The great 8 found himself climbing the ladder on the all-time goals list and it appears he will not stop.
Ovechkin started the season ninth on the list with 706 goals. Midseason, he got hot and found the net quite often.
On Mar 16, 2021, Ovechkin scored his 718 goal of his career and surpassed Phil Esposito (717) for sixth all-time.
The Capitals captain currently sits just one goal shy of Marcel Dionne (719) for fifth all-time and 164 behind the great Wayne Gretzky.
Fans return to Capital One Arena
For the first time in over a year, the Capitals welcomed fans back into the stands.
The Capitals took on the New York Islanders on Apr 27, 2021 in front of a few thousand in attendance.
The emotion behind the Washington faithful proved to be too much for the Islanders as the Capitals would win 1-0.
The winning goal came early from forward Daniel Sprong in the first period. The win was also goaltender Vitek Vanecek’s 18-save shutout.
