The Washington Capitals had a day off on Saturday. During that day off, Alex Ovechkin got reevaluated for his lower body injury that he suffered in Friday’s preseason finale against the Philadelphia Flyers. On Sunday morning the Capitals held a practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Ovechkin wasn’t on the ice and the team said he is day to day with a lower body injury.

No surprises that Ovechkin wasn’t able to practice today. The way he came down in the first period of Friday’s game after that awkward hit on Travis Konecny did not look good. As the hit happened, Konecny’s skate came in contact with Ovechkin’s left leg. Ovechkin came down before skating off the ice but hobbling to the locker room. He did not return to the game.

It is likely head coach Peter Laviolette and the rest of the team will be cautious when it comes to Ovechkin. T.J. Oshie was optimistic in his postgame interview the other night that Ovechkin will be fine:

"“There’s always a concern. We were kind of joking in the room there that he has Russian blood, he’ll be back soon. He’s a tough guy. It’s always concerning seeing him lay there, but no doubt he’ll be back scoring goals in no time.”"

With that latest update, let’s take a look at what the Capitals lines were during Sunday’s practice to get a gist of what the lineup could be if Ovechkin can’t play Wednesday night. Before we get into the lines, a big note: Connor McMichael was skating in Ovechkin’s spot on the top line. Hendrix Lapierre centered the third line.

When Ovechkin does come back he will enter the first season of his five year contract extension that he signed in late July. He sits at 730 goals needing just two to pass Marcel Dionne for fifth place on the NHL’s all time scoring list. Prayers up for Ovechkin on a speedy recovery.
